Serving as President Elect of ESAPS (the European Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) and Chair of the Membership Committee, Dr. Pierfrancesco Cirillo has taken on a unique role: representing Europe's plastic surgeons before the EU authorities in Brussels. His mission is clear - resolve long-standing issues affecting the profession while strengthening patient safety across the continent.
A First for the Profession
ESAPS has now been officially registered as an interest group with the European Parliament, making it the only scientific society for plastic surgery listed in this register. It's a significant milestone, giving the profession a formal seat at the table when EU regulation is being shaped.
The Loophole That Puts Patients at Risk
The next step is ambitious. ESAPS plans to engage professional representation in Brussels and establish dedicated working groups focused on closing a persistent legislative loophole - one that currently allows non-specialist doctors to perform cosmetic surgery, putting patient safety seriously at risk.
This is a significant undertaking, and one ESAPS can only carry out with the backing of the wider European plastic surgery community.
A Call to Action
Becoming a member of ESAPS, then, means more than joining a professional body - it means taking an active part in this mission. Dr. Cirillo is calling on all Presidents of the National Societies to help represent the profession as effectively as possible, by encouraging plastic surgeons in their countries to join ESAPS.
An Ambitious Beginning
This goal sits at the heart of Cirillo's term, which officially begins at the BAAPS x ESAPS Joint Congress in London, from 1-3 October 2026. Alongside this, the society's existing scientific and training initiatives continue at full pace. With a team of exceptional professional and personal calibre by his side, Cirillo is confident in what the society can achieve together.
Aesthetic surgery belongs to specialists - and we are those specialists.
